The default condition of humanity is that we are all perishing because of our sin. When a Hebrew believed something, he didn't merely give intellectual assent to some truth - he staked his very life and existence upon it. Our belief in Jesus, therefore, is a daily, active, dynamic conviction that alters the trajectory of our entire life.

All of our giving and all of our gifts are mere afterthoughts to God's incredible gift of his Son. And this Son is utterly unique – he is the "only begotten." In spite of all the hell fire sermons that have been preached, God's fundamental approach to humanity in all of its problems is not wrath, but love. And what is so striking is that God didn't love us AFTER we cleaned up our act, he loves us in the midst of our sin and brokenness. Thus we, too, are called to love those around us in the midst of their brokenness and sin.
