I Quit...

April 17: Feeling Guilty
Pastor John Martz • 21:15

Jews, Catholics, and Protestants all speak as though their perspective on faith induces a greater sense of guilt than any other group. God wired us with conscience for much the same reason that he gave us pain receptors - to help guide and protect us. But like pain, our conscience can prove to be a curse if it prevents us from receiving and living in the grace that Christ provided. The call of the Gospel is not to live in a sense of bondage, but rather the sense of joyful freedom of those who have been liberated.

We don't GO to church; we ARE the church. When we come to Christ, the Holy Spirit resides within us, and we become living temples of the Spirit of God. GOING to church makes it easy to believe that someone else is responsible for the work of the Kingdom; but when we realize we ARE the church our sense of ownership and belonging goes way up!

April 3: Trying to Fix My Spouse and Friends

The internal sense of responsibility we all have to fix what is not quite right in other people leads us to blur healthy boundaries on a regular basis. I am responsible TO people, but I am not responsible FOR them. Only the Holy Spirit can work from the inside to bring change; we are called to pray for, encourage, and speak truth gently into the lives of those around us.

Many people live much of their life gripped by fear of the unknown and anxiety about the future. But God's intention is to free us from that grip, and deliver us into a walk that is defined by his grace and the knowledge that there is nothing that can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. That hope is not designed as guarantee from all difficulty, but rather the promise that God is and will be with us in every season and chapter of life.

Many people over the centuries have confused true spirituality with a posture of being a doormat to the world. But a close examination of Scripture reveals that while true Christianity is humble, honest, and sensitive to the needs - it is far from wimpy. Paul reminds young Timothy that the spirit of the Gospel is not one of timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.

March 13: Pretending

Human beings have been good at pretending to be something they are not for millennia. At the end of the day it doesn't matter what others think of us; all that matters is how we appear before an audience of One. If anyone should be marked by authenticity, it should be the followers of Christ.
